Rooted in Detroit

The history of the Settles family has been traced back to 1100AD to a village in Europe by the name of Settle.  It is believed that this is where the surname of Settles comes from. There were a great number of descendants of Phillip and Nancy Settles living in the Detroit area that did not know each other. The thought of bringing them together occurred to Carrie Bussey on Christmas morning in 1975. She mentioned this to her sister, Ella Ruth Hamilton, and they in turn decided to something to bring the family together. In March 1976, Ella Ruth invited the relatives that she knew for an evening of socializing. From this gathering came the organization of the Settles Family Reunion Clan. As of today, there are seven (7) chapters of the Settles family reunion.
